Kappa
The Kappa is a creature with a dish on top of its head that holds water. It is known for pulling people into the water or stealing their shirikodama—a mythical organ located near the anus. When someone’s shirikodama is stolen, they become weak and limp. Kappa are also strong, enjoy sumo wrestling, and are particularly fond of cucumbers.
This yokai embodies the dangers of nature, particularly rivers, ponds, and seas. Even the best swimmers can lose their lives if they make a mistake. However, Kappa are also said to reward people who help them, offering gifts such as medicine or valuable items.

Excerpts from the books of Kunio Yanagita
In areas around Tsujigawa, Kappa are known as Gataro and are notorious for their pranks. The author recalls stories from his childhood, where he heard tales of Kappa pulling people’s butts while swimming in Ichikawa. Many children in his group fell victim to this prank, which is a well-known characteristic of Kappa.
