Local Specialties & Souvenirs

Mochimugi (Pearl Barley Noodles, Pearl Barley Dorayaki, etc.)

Mochimugi (pearl barley) contains more ash content compared to regular wheat used for noodles and is high in protein and minerals. It is also rich in beta-glucan, which is said to help lower cholesterol levels. With its sticky texture, mochimugi offers a pleasantly chewy sensation, more so than regular barley.

As a local specialty, mochimugi is cultivated entirely by local cooperative members, from sowing to harvesting. In Fukusaki Town, the tradition of growing mochimugi dates back centuries, with the grain historically consumed in the form of dumplings.

Mochimugi noodles may look similar to soba at first glance, but their texture is more like that of firm udon. Neither udon nor soba, their unique toasted aroma and chewy texture have earned them widespread popularity.

Horned Eggplant (Solanum mammosum)

The Horned Eggplant, also known as “Fox Face” due to its humorous resemblance to a fox’s face, is a popular ornamental plant. Each branch produces more than seven bright yellow fruits. The plant features purple flowers, and its fruits change from green to yellow, with the harvest season lasting approximately two months from late September.

As a specialty of Fukusaki Town, the fruit is sold at the JA direct sales store “Shunsaikan Fukusaki” and at local product events during the harvest period. It is also referred to as the “Yellow Fruit that Brings Happiness” and is regarded as a lucky charm.

Mochimugi no Yakata

Mochimugi no Yakata offers everything related to the local specialty “mochimugi” (pearl barley), including the manufacturing and sale of mochimugi noodles, as well as a restaurant. They offer a variety of mochimugi products such as semi-dried and dried mochimugi noodles, tea, and sweets. These make great souvenirs or gifts. Don’t miss their recommended mochimugi soft serve ice cream!
