Nagusa no Taki consists of the male and female falls, along with 48 other falls, and has been selected as one of the Eight Views of the Prefecture, the 100 Best Tourist Spots in the Prefecture, and the 100 Best Scenic Spots in the Kinki region. Among them, the male fall (pictured left) has a height of 72 meters and a width of 3 meters, displaying the charm of what is called “48 changes.” During the rainy season or other times of high water volume, the falls offer a particularly dramatic and powerful sight.

At an elevation of 683 meters, Nagusayama Mountain is composed of rhyolitic rocks, and within the mountain, you can find unique rock formations such as Tsunagi Rock and Kasa Rock. It is listed in the Harima Fudoki as “Nagusa-yama” and is also known for the Seven Falls, including the male fall, and the 48 waterfalls found in the area.

Tsunagi Rock, located near the summit of Nagusayama Mountain, is believed to have been visited by Kōbō Daishi during the early Heian period. It is said that he practiced the secret rituals of goma (fire offerings) atop this rock. Standing 15 meters tall and 5 meters wide, the rock displays a unique feature where the natural cleaving along the rock’s structure stops midway, and at the base, it is connected to the bedrock, creating a remarkable sight.

The Satoyama Park Nagusa no Mori, where you can easily enjoy walking through the satoyama (village forests), is adjacent to Taguchi Okui, known for its beautiful water surface, and is surrounded by natural landscapes throughout the four seasons. It is also close to scenic spots such as the Seven Falls, Tsunagi Rock, and Kongōjō-ji Temple. With mountain huts, tent sites, and other facilities, it is an ideal location for camping.

Around mid-June, the Saru (Sal Tree) flowers bloom every morning at Ōshō-ji Temple. However, by the evening of the same day, the flowers have already fallen. The Saru flowers are famous for being depicted in the Heike Monogatari as a symbol of the impermanence of all things, embodying the concept of “mujo” (the transience of life).

In the Harima-no-kuni Fudoki, created approximately 1,300 years ago, it is written that Takeiwashiki no Mikoto, the child of the deity at Iwa Shrine in Shiso City, descended upon Kamusaki Mountain. Because it was considered a sacred mountain with the presence of a deity, it came to be known as Kamusaki-yama, and this is said to be the origin of the name “Kamisaki District.” On the mountaintop behind the Ni-no-Miya Shrine, there is a large rock called “Iwakura,” which is believed to be the place where Takeiwashiki no Mikoto descended.

Iwakura (Sacred Rock) is a large rock located at the top of the mountain behind Ni-no-Miya Shrine. It is believed to be the place where Takeiwashiki no Mikoto, the child of the deity at Iwa Shrine in Shiso City, descended and took residence upon the rock.

At an elevation of 198 meters, Kasuga Mountain is home to the ruins of Kasuga-yama Castle, which is believed to have been the residence of the Banshu Goto family. In his book “The Seventy Years of My Hometown”, Yanagita Kunio reflects on his life and recounts an anecdote from his childhood where, while playing in the water at Komaga-ishi in Ichikawa, a kappa pulls his buttocks. This kappa legend became the inspiration for the character “Gajirou,” the mascot of Fukusaki Town.

The view from the summit of Nikkouji Mountain, with an elevation of 408 meters, is spectacular. You can see the Himeji Plain, Harima Coastal Industrial Zone, the Ie Islands, and even the Rokko Mountain Range in the distance. A telescope is installed on the temple grounds for visitors to enjoy the panoramic view. On clear days, you can even spot the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge.

“The Hundred Selected Reservoirs” is a project led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, which selects areas with outstanding features in terms of landscape, history, biodiversity, and other aspects. In Hyogo Prefecture, six areas have been chosen. The reservoir cluster in the Saikouji-no-Daichi area spans from Fukusaki Town to Himeji City and mainly consists of the Sakura-Uwaike, Nagaiike, and Okuike reservoirs. This is a densely clustered area of reservoirs (the photo is of Nagaiike).

Sanshishi Mountain is said to have gotten its name because, from a distance, it appears as though three lions are lying side by side. The area offers three main hiking trails: Minzoku no Mori, Monju Oyama no Mori, and Daimon Miya-yama no Mori, making it a peaceful spot for seasonal countryside walks, even though it is located near the city. It provides a relaxing escape into nature.
